Mega description: how to use mega description on your blog posts

What is a mega description

Mega description is a page description displayed under the page title in a search engine result page. It is the brief page summary that is highlighted under your page title in the search engine’s organic search results. See the example below

What is the importance of mega description

Mega descriptions are certainly informative, introductory and call to action (CTA). Two things can make someone click your page (title and mega description) from the different alternative pages. That means your mega descriptions can speak well when it comes to clicks.

Writing a good title accompanied by clickable mega description is necessary for getting clicks from search results. When your page is ranking well but not getting the desired clicks check your mega description.

Therefore mega description gives a brief summary for your intended audience, telling them what to expect from your page. When it attract their attention then they are likely to click your page but when it falls to do so you are loosing clicks already. Update your mega description.

How do I know if my mega description and page title are doing well?

This is what to do if you want to check the effectiveness of your title and mega description on the search engine organic search results.

Go to your Google search console dashboard and click on “performance” from the left menu.

In the performance page add your page to see it’s search engine organic search performance. Now in this performance report you should be able to know if your title and mega description is getting the right clicks.

By comparing the search “impressions” and the “clicks” plus the “click through rate”.

Your impressions tell how many times your page is listed on search results and your clicks tell how many times your page get clicks from those search results (impressions) and your click through rate (CTR) calculates how many times your page get clicks divided by how many times you get listed on SERPs [CTR=clicks divided by Impressions].

If your impressions are high and your clicks are low that means there is a problem with your mega description and title or any of the two.

How to write a good mega description

To write a good mega description you must focus on:

  1. Content type. To now the best mega description that will work for you, know the type of content you are writing about. When you’re write about how tos and your mega description is historical that is the first problem you have.
  2. Your target audience. This are the category of people you are targeting for your page. Therefore if your target audience are car buyers, your description should focus on how to get the attention of car buyers to click your page.
  3. Search intend. This is the reason why someone make a search. Everyone has a specific reason why he his searching the internet therefore focus on that reasons. When you know the search intend of your target audience use the mega description to attract their attention for their search intends.
  4. Page content. Your mega description must have a direct relation with your content. As I have once said, mega description are page summary, therefore it must give a brief summary of your page content so as to get the right clicks and audience for your page.
  5. Heading/title. This is how it is, your page tell what your page is all about and your mega description give more information for the page. So your mega description must tally with your title tag.
  6. Keywordsthese are the phrases or word you want to rank for in the organic search results.

Example of a good mega description

To write a good mega description you must follow the above 6 rules. However, I will show you the example of a good mega description

1)

Page title:how to cook fried rice for beginners.

Rules to follow to create mega description for this page.

  1. Content type= how to
  2. Target audience (niche)= foods, cooks, lifestyle, family, etc.
  3. Search intend= someone looking for how to cook fried rice.
  4. Page content= your page content
  5. Title= how to cook fried rice for beginners.
  6. Keywords= cook fried rice

Now I may write my mega description as thus:

Do you want to cook fried rice but don’t know how to start? Let’s start by putting the ingredients together and follow these simple steps.

Or

There are two ways to cook a fried rice: 1 (name of the first), 2 (name of the second). I will teach you both.

The first example will get clicks from anyone who want to learn how to cook fried rice while the second will mainly get clicks from people who want to learn how to cook fried rice those two ways.

How to add nofollow on comments automatically on Blogger

This article will show you how to specifically add nofollow on comments automatically on Blogger so that all comment’s links like author profile links and any other link on comments will have nofollow as soon as the comments are published without you adding the nofollow attribute for every individual comments link.

In my other post I have talk about the difference between dofollow and nofollow links and how to add one on links but I have not mention how to add it on comments much especially on Blogger blog. That is why I feel the need to tell my dear readers how to add nofollow on comments automatically on Blogger blogs.

Nevertheless, before I proceed I will briefly explain what are nofollow links.

Dofollow and nofollow links

What are nofollow links

Nofollow links are links that have the nofollow attribute (rel=”nofollow”) which is use to prevent search engines like Google from following the links by telling the search engines that the particular URL should not be followed when crawling the page that contain the link.

For instance, when bots are crawling a particular page and during the crawling it finds a link 🔗 on the page the bot will as well try to follow that link and crawl the destination page. So the more pages that are linking to that page and the more qualitative those links are the more SEO benefits it gets.

So if you are not willing to let search 🔍 engine bots to crawl such pages you need to add nofollow on them. Such links might include sponsored links, affiliate links, comments, etc.

A normal dofollow links should look like this:

https://hehelpbloggers.blogspot.com

While nofollow links should look like this:

https://hehelpbloggers.blogspot.com/ rel=”nofollow”

Why do you need to add nofollow on comments

We all need to add nofollow on comments for the following reasons:

  1. Usually comments are made to receive feedbacks from readers but unfortunately some spammers use it to generate backlinks. Adding nofollow on comments will discourage spammers.
  2. Spammy comments distract search engines from the main keyword and their for lower your ranking.
  3. Spammy comments makes it harder for you to know who really love your post and therefore think many people love your post while it is not so.
  4. We also add nofollow on comments links to reduce panda effects which reduces our traffic.
